the Soukup HOUSE

Deep in the foothills and abutting hundreds of acres of open space, this residence is a perfect place to relax and relish the beauty of nature. With this idyllic setting comes the challenge of thoughtfully integrating the built environment with the natural one.

Thrive used large three-ton Siloam boulders, swaths of native grass, bluegrass turf and other natural materials to create an intentional transition between the typical suburban yard to the wild open space at the back of the property. The homeowners are avid perennial gardeners with a love for the mountains, and a need to have useable entertainment space. Upon walking out the back door of the home one crosses the large wooden deck to a leveled turf area. From there the boulders and fingers of native grass break up the typical backyard landscape and transition the eye to the rolling hills and sandstone cliffs beyond. A simple crushed granite pathway meanders through the landscape to carry you up the grade to a gate at the back of the property and into the open space.

The use of boulders and an extensive regrading of the site eliminated the dated look of failing railroad ties, giving the property an aesthetic and functionality that will stand the test of time and increase its resale value.
